FLYING CHANGES COURSE
By Tristan Tucker

The change he offers, not the one you chase. So it lands clean, and it lands calm.

Eleven video lessons that build the flying change from the preparation upward, with two case studies: the horse with a big canter, and the overeager athletic one.

WHO IS THE FLYING CHANGES COURSE FOR?

He can do it in the field. That is not the question.

  • The change that comes in late behind

Front changes, then a stride, then maybe the hind. You have been told to ride more forward, ride straighter, ride it off the outside leg, and none of it changed the timing because the timing was never the issue.

  • The horse who gets hot at the word

He learned that this exercise means excitement. Now the canter tightens before you have asked, and every attempt makes the next one harder.

  • The rider who has tried three methods

Everyone teaches changes differently and everyone is certain. You have collected techniques and what you needed was a way to work out which one fits the horse under you.

Sound familiar?

  • The change is late behind, every time, on the same rein.
  • He anticipates and changes when you have not asked.
  • The canter falls apart in the stride before.
  • He gets hot and stays hot for the rest of the session.
  • You get one good change and cannot repeat it.
  • You have tried three ways and half-abandoned all of them.
  • You would like it calm, not just present.

"If you are not chasing changes at all, the preparation work here still improves your canter, your straightness and your transitions."

THE REAL PROBLEM

A flying change is a moment of complete airborne reorganisation.

He can only give you a clean one from a canter he is genuinely balanced in, and only if the request arrives without a spike of tension attached. When the change is late behind, it is usually not a training gap in the change itself. It is a horse whose hindquarters were never free enough to arrive on time.

Prepare the balance before the change.

When he gets hot about it, that is the tension talking. Repeating the exercise repeats the tension, which is why one good change is so often followed by ten worse ones. So the course spends most of its time on what comes before: preparing the transition, positioning the shoulders in walk and then in canter, and using counter-canter to set the balance up.

Your instructor

Meet Tristan Tucker.

Tristan spent years working with horses at the top of the sport, and with the horses that were not coping with it. What he kept finding was the same thing: the behaviour everyone was trying to train away was a body that had never learned how to come back down.

The TRT Method came out of that, and it is now used by more than 122,000 riders in over 90 countries.

Tristan's line on changes is that there are many ways to teach one and the skill is choosing the one that fits the horse in front of you. This course is that choice, made explicit.

LESSON PLAN

Three parts, and the jump across comes in part two.

You start with the transition, not the change. That is where the late hind leg is decided.

Flying Changes Course lessonPart 01

Prepare the canter

Everything that has to be true before you ask.

  • Introduction, and what you need
  • Teaching him to prepare for a transition, and working within it
  • Positioning the shoulders in walk, then in canter
Flying Changes Course lessonPart 02

Set it up, and ask

Counter-canter, the whip, and the first jump across.

  • Setting them up through counter-canter
  • Learning to follow the whip while riding
  • The first jump across, and building on it
Flying Changes Course lessonPart 03

Two horses, two problems

The big canter, and the overeager one.

  • A horse with a big canter
  • An overeager and athletic horse
  • What to take into your own work

Eleven lessons, and eight of them happen before the first change. That is not a slow start, that is the method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before you decide.

At the beginning. The preparation lessons are exactly where a late hind leg gets corrected, and skipping to the change lessons is what has kept it late.

A normal arena is enough. The counter-canter and shoulder work need space to be honest about the balance, not a competition surface.
