How to help your horse past a scary object
Tristan Tucker
Founder of the TRT Method
Watch Tristan Tucker explain preparation, redirecting and finding rest when an unexpected object worries your horse.
A guidance plan, not just a plan to get past
Before hacking out, Tristan thinks about preparation and simulation: helping his horse understand what he may encounter, and practising a guidance plan before an unexpected situation arises. In this demonstration with Dario, a bucket becomes an opportunity to explain that preparation.
Tristan shows why holding with the reins while adding leg can create conflicting pressure. Rather than restraining Dario when he turns away, he describes taking his leg off, redirecting a hind leg and releasing again. The aim in this session is to guide, rather than keep holding.
When Dario faces the object, Tristan rewards him with a release and a rub. He gives the horse room to assess it and approach without being pushed, returning to that facing position when his attention moves away.
Getting closer is not the only goal. Tristan also moves away and finds a place where Dario can rest in the object's presence, without being overfaced or expecting another demand. Watch the demonstration for the timing and context: this is not a stand-alone guide or a guarantee of safety. Practise the preparation with appropriate professional support rather than attempting a dangerous situation unprepared.
